More details

The two floors of the building feature hardwood flooring; oak painted white to match the walls and furniture, all to reflect the White Cube gallery style. The ‘furniture’ pieces all bear accents of unpainted softwood to contrast and compliment the all-white theme. The ceiling is inspired by the original floorplan of the space, extruded to then become a geometric wooden ceiling detail with light protruding through each gap in the surfaces. All the furniture are downward projections of the ceiling detail. A support beam cuts through the middle of the ground floor and overlaps with the ceiling detail. This is painted red to accentuate it rather than cover up the original foundations of the build. The red represents the red dot placed beside an artwork in a gallery after it has been sold, hence the title ‘red dot’. The downstairs of the building uses the same concept, with a stark white theme and the coffee ring details of the ‘red dot’ logo on the walls.

Red dot is a contemporary space designed to host coffee openings in the style of an art gallery. Visitors engage in a sensory journey akin to admiring art, mingling and meandering as they taste the new coffee blends. Like patrons inspired to purchase art, visitors are able to buy the coffee they taste. Red dot is a space where coffee transcends mere beverage and becomes an immersive art form. With inspiration from RAAAF's "The End of Sitting”, the furniture design encourages dynamic interaction, offering leaning pieces and standing options instead of the traditional seating of a café.
The space is intended to direct your attention to the coffee and consider it as if you were considering art. An intimate, thoughtful process that challenges the societal norm of the cafes we go to in modern society.
